NASA Directors to Visit Weldall

Representatives from Marshall Space Flight Center to recognize employees for achievement.
Traveling to Weldall will be senior program representatives, engineering test personnel and retired astronaut Don Thomas, a veteran of four Space Shuttle missions.
Weldall Mfg., a 2012 Wisconsin Manufacturer of the Year, is manufacturing complex structural fabrications, classified as Special Test Equipment (STE), in support of the Space Launch System Program for the George C. Marshall Space Flight Center, Huntsville, AL.
NASA’s Space Launch System, or SLS, is an advanced launch vehicle for a new era of exploration beyond Earth’s orbit into deep space, (www.nasa.gov/exploration/systems/sls).
The fabrications Weldall is manufacturing will be used for testing four of the five rocket core stage elements: the Engine Section, Inter Tank, Liquid Oxygen Tank, and Forward Skirt.
The Special Test Equipment, or STE, is comprised of large steel fabrications, unique to each core stage element, designed to support and stabilize the individual, or a combination, of component configurations along with the associated test equipment and sensors required for each series of tests. These STE “fixtures” vary in design and weight, the largest having an estimated finished weight of approx. 638,000 pounds, not including the core stage element.
